Tell us a short version of your birth:
Due to a marginal previa, Charlotte was born via C-section on May 17th,
2016. It was scheduled at 8 am so it wasn’t any surprise! Being awake
during the surgical procedure was a great experience because I was able
to hear her scream when they pulled her out and it was beautiful. The
surgical team was professional and made me feel warm and safe through
the whole procedure, which didn’t take long at all! Once she was
delivered, everyone said “Happy Birthday” to Charlotte, it was really
cute. After crying my eyes out of pure happiness, with my husband by my
side, this baby friendly hospital laid her right on my chest so we could
bond as they finished the surgery.
What was the first thing you thought when you held your new baby?
When they laid her on my chest I couldn’t believe she was here! She was
perfect and exactly what I pictured because she looked like her 3D ultra
sound picture! She was healthy and barely crying the moment we were skin
to skin. Best feeling in the world.
What was the first day home with baby like?
I was nervous to leave the hospital and the staff because they were so
helpful and it became my little home for 2 days. But the moment we
walked in our house, it felt so right. I had my mother and my husband
helping me and my husband changed 99% of the diapers! Having help was
the best and having her in our home, HER fist home, was really
emotional. This is the place she’s going to take her first step and
beginning life and all those emotions hit you when you walk through the
door home from the hospital. We showed her the nursery where she would
be and everything just felt like a dream. Our baby girl was here!
What are your newborn must-have purchase items?
A rock n play has been a great place to set her down and it’s easy to
carry up and down stairs or put in the car if you’re going to someone’s
house! My daughter really likes anything that vibrates, so the rock n
play has a vibration setting and she loves it. I received a sound
machine from an in law and it has been very soothing for her. She loves
the sound of running water! Who knew! Also, a humidifier was important
because she got a little cold early on. I have purchased like 5 Muslin
Swaddles because she loves to be swaddled and they stretch so well.
What postpartum advice for women getting ready to have their own
I would say, make sure you have some help or to ask for help because the
lack of sleep and constant feeding will drain anybody! If you’re
breastfeeding, going to a lactation consultant multiple times to really
understand how to properly breastfeed was really helpful in my case.
Don’t get discouraged if you can’t get anything done those first couple
weeks, the laundry will wait and the dishes will wait, focus on your
sleep and sanity first.
Something you wish you’d known before having a baby?
I wish I knew more about the days i’d spend in the hospital and what
would happen to my body. Whether you’re delivering vaginally or by
c-section, what your body goes through are very similar after and I wish
I had looked into that more. It was fine, but I certainly wish there was
more out there. I also wish I looked into breastfeeding tips before hand
as well and what would help me increase my milk supply and what to
expect in general!
One thing that you believe is beautiful about being a mother?
I get to look at this blessing I helped create and know that I get to
watch her grow. I get to watch every development and be there for her
through it all and it just melts my heart. We have such an incredible
bond and being able to see this human that looks like you is incredible!
This life that was inside of you is now here and all the sleepless
nights and spit up in my hair is all worth it to be able to help her
grow into the beautiful woman that she will become. I love it and
wouldn’t change a thing about this journey.
Kind words about your photographer?
Stevie is a friend from High School and when she did our photoshoot on
her vacation time, I was truly blessed! She and her husband are so sweet
and she really knew what to do! She was professional and fun and really
helped this new mom out with tricks to calm the baby and positions that
Charlotte would like. I was very happy and as you can see, the pictures
turned out perfect!

“After Kelly + Travis got married a few years ago in Sunny California, Travis was stationed in Germany with the military. The newlyweds packed up, and headed over seas, ready for the new adventure. After living in Europe for a few years, they decided it was time to settle down and start a family. Travis was relocated to Washington where they would welcome their new baby girl, Charlotte Elizabeth Rose, to the world!”
