Every Wednesday on Blmommy.com it is BIRTH-DAY where we share a beautiful birth story and Birth Photography with you. This is one of our favorite columns of the week, because let’s me honest, who doesn’t love a beautiful new baby life and hearing from the mother her story about pregnancy and birth? It fills our hearts!
How has birth changed you as a woman?
Empowerment. Growing a human and giving life is a crazy, powerful concept. You feel like a superhero. And then having the baby is the most magical experience on the planet. And you are NEVER the same… in EVERY way.
What advice do you wish you had known before giving birth ?
Don’t worry so much. What is going to happen is going to happen and there’s no book or birth plan that can accurately prepare you perfectly! So just relax and try to enjoy the experience as much as possible.
Tell us a little about your birth story?
Best day of my whole life. My water broke at 1am (45 minutes after I had finally gone to bed)—3 weeks before my due date. I had been running around like a crazy person trying to get through my busy season at work, unpack and organize our new house and get everything ready for baby! I needed just a little more time, but my baby had other plans. He was ready. So off we went to the hospital, hitting EVERY red light on our way! We waited to tell our friends and family the baby was coming until a reasonable hour because I knew we had some time. I started Pitocin at 3:00am, family and contractions arrived around 8:00am, epidural around lunch, fully dilated around dinner, quick belly photoshoot at 10cm, pushed for 1 hour and 45 minutes, little Joseph Howard Reevie joined our family and this world on March 13th at 7:59pm.
What are your three must-have birth bag items?
Comfy linens (towels, sheets, blanket, pillow), bring your own pads (hospital grade suck) and extra receiving blankets for baby.
What is one thing you find beautiful about birth?
Just one thing??! My favorite part about giving birth was the family that it brought together. It is one of those special times in life (like weddings and funerals) that brings people together. And on top of that, we got to add one more to the mix.
What would you tell someone who just found out they were pregnant?
DON’T FIND OUT WHAT YOU ARE HAVING!! It is one of life’s great surprises and is SO worth the wait. And don’t wait too long to bust out the maternity pants!
What were your beauty must-haves while pregnant?
Words about your photographer?
This could take a while. I’ve known my photographer on a personal level for a long time, and I have a very special place in my heart for her. I was on the fence about birth photography and before I could really decide, there she was. At the hospital, hanging with my family, capturing the most specialist of memories for me. She is a brilliant photographer who made a seemly awkward situation seem totally normal and comfortable. She loves me, and I love her. Can you really ask for anything more?

AND I LIVE TO TELL STORIES.
STORIES OF YOUR LOVE. OF YOUR LAUGHTER. OF YOUR JOY. OF YOUR TRIUMPH.
You know that feeling you get in your gut when you just know you are doing exactly what you should be doing? That feeling that lets you say with all of your heart that “This is exactly where I’m supposed to be”? I don’t think I’ve ever known a better feeling, and every time I shoot a wedding, or photograph people in love, I get that feeling. I love love. There’s something about spending time with those in love – whether it be families, couples, even a slobbery pup or two – and capturing it with my camera that just makes me feel whole. Telling your stories…it’s what makes me whole.
Other things I love –
My husband, Nate, and his eternal optimism. My son, Emmett and his toothy smile. Rainy days. Iced caramel macchiatos. The smell of the first summer bbq. My grandpa’s crazy banjo songs.
