In your own words, tell us about being pregnant, the mother you have become while carrying new life, and how it’s changed you.
After four years of trying to conceive, our little miracle finally happened naturally and in a perfect timing. Pregnancy has been so good to me. Luckily, I’ve been feeling wonderful and still full of energy. We’ve been documenting and journaling everything. I am definitely trying to soak it all in. The whole experience has been amazing. Feeling our baby kick, seeing my body change and most of all learning how baby grows every single week is astonishing.

How did you find out you were expecting?
June 2016 was our final month of “trying” naturally. It had been long enough and we were told by doctors that our best option at this point would be IVF. I prayed for a miracle one. last. time. We had been taking care of and time for ourselves all Summer long and we wanted this to happen naturally more than ever. Come July 2016 I was feeling little stretches and pains, so I decided to take one last test. I just assumed it would be yet another negative. I was home alone when I took the test and to my surprise it was POSITIVE. I fell to my knees in tears and disbelief. It’s a day in a women’s life that she’ll never forget.
How did you tell the father?
That weekend I had big plans to do something “Pinterest” worthy and perfect to tell my husband. But I just couldn’t wait another day or hour. So the following morning I decided to put the pregnancy test next to our little fur baby who was laying in our bed. I said, go into our room…Dexter needs to tell you something. Derek rounded the corner and saw the test next to Dexter. We immediately cried tears of joy and Derek’s first words were, “Is this real?”. An unforgettable moment for me. I wish I could re-live it.
Did you find out the gender of your baby? Is there a name picked out yet? We sure did! It’s a boy and his name is Jonah James. We had a small gender reveal party with our closest family and friends. It was so much revealing to them with colored cupcakes.
How has pregnancy changed you as a woman?
Pregnancy has helped me love and appreciate the female body that much more. We are so strong. The changes our bodies endure while pregnant are amazing. It’s so exciting every week to see that little bump grow. I think all pregnant bodies are beautiful and strong. I have never felt more strong. From the minute I found out I was pregnant, I just wanted the best for my body and for baby Jonah.
What advice do you wish you had known before getting pregnant (even if it’s something gross)?
I wish someone would have told me that peeing yourself a little is a REAL thing. It’s not a joke people. 😉 So be ready! Oh, and that pregnancy goes by fast. Enjoy every minute.
What is one thing you find beautiful about being pregnant? For me, it has been the bond that my husband and I have created over this. The excitement we share is just beautiful. What’s beautiful has been the way that Derek has been loving and serving me through my worst of days. I have loved watching him slowly grow into his father role as well. Seeing my husbands hands on this precious baby bump of mine will never get old.
What would you tell someone who just found out they were pregnant?
Choose joy. Remember that even through the worst nausea and back pains that you have a tiny miracle growing inside of you. Remember that your body is doing what it’s supposed to and to stay positive because pregnancy will go by so fast. Journal and document everything that you can.
What has been the hardest part of pregnancy?
Bending over to put on my shoes? 😉
Did you have any pregnancy cravings or aversions?
Cravings=all things Mexican food. Give me all the guac!
What are your beauty must-haves while pregnant?
A simple natural makeup routine. Currently loving all of the new Bare Minerals products. I also have been loving the Honest beauty/body line! It’s important to choose products that are safe and good for our bodies.
Do you have any favorite maternity items you couldn’t live without?
Maternity leggings all day everyday!
Can you share with our mommies where you purchased the items you wore for your maternity session?
The robe is a bridal robe from Victoria’s secret. Everything else is from the Old Navy maternity line. Old Navy has great steals on the basics.
Tell us about your session and what the images mean to you. *
I’m actually a photographer myself, so I had done a great job setting up sessions throughout my pregnancy. Lots of outdoor captures through the seasons with planned outfits and props. For our maternity session, I wanted something different. Something US. I knew Alysha was the perfect girl for the job. I invited her into our home on a Sunday morning to capture us in our natural element. No posing, no fancy outfits. She captured us so genuinely. We are always hanging out in the nursery, cuddling in bed together dreaming of baby and enjoying our last months together just “us two” on the couch binge watching Netflix. We also love cooking, eating clean and spending time together in the kitchen. She captured it all. Thank you, Alysha!
