Tell us about your design process. Did you start with one central item or idea that served as your inspiration?
I’ve always loved the ocean, so when I saw the Marine Queen bedding from Land of Nod, I instantly fell in love. To me, it feels both whimsical and modern. It’s pretty without being over-the-top feminine. I bought the bedding the day after I found out we were having a girl, and we went from there.
What was the most important thing you wanted to achieve when creating this space?
First and foremost, we wanted to create a safe and functional place for our baby to sleep and play. As she grows older, we hope that she will enjoy some of the more thoughtful touches that we tried to add with decor. We hope that her room is a place where she will have fun and learn to let her imagination grow.
Now that the accent walls have dried and bedding is neatly tucked, what is your favorite thing about the room? There is a piece of sea fan coral in a shadow box above the glider, and it’s my favorite thing in the room. My sister’s godfather made the wooden box by hand, and my mom and I designed, painted, and assembled the rest of the piece. It holds a special place in my heart because we put a lot of love into creating something unique for my own daughter.
What’s the first thing people notice when stepping foot into this room?
Probably all of the bubbles on the walls!
If you had to remove one key item from the room, what would you part with?
The hanging bookshelves are cute, and we thought we were being very creative because they are actually spice racks from Ikea. However, our daughter is obsessed with taking down every single book and leaving them all in a pile on the floor, so at the moment they aren’t living up to their destiny as a useful item.
If you could add another item to the room, what would be your first choice?
A big toy box to contain the mess!
Hi, my name is Melissa and I specialize in family, maternity, lifestyle newborn and children photography in Orange County, California. Lifestyle and candid photos are my most favorite to capture. I am a fun loving, optimistic, imaginative, patient person. I am a mommy to two amazing kids (13 and 5 years old, yes I LOVE the age gap), married to the love of my life…my husband of 16 years – we are both US Air Force veterans, which is how we met. I love anything artsy and crafty, crocheting is my favorite hobby when I can find the time to do it. You will find in my camera bag: Canon 5D Mark iii, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8 and my most favorite lens, my 35mmL 1.4. I am originally from St Louis, Missouri but am now a total California girl, my heart is near the ocean. My children inspire me to pursue photography. Friends and family encouraged me to start a business (5 years ago) doing what I am passionate about and what makes me happy – making others smile through my images.
