How has birth changed you as a woman?
Giving birth and becoming a mom has changed me forever. I no longer put my needs first but focus on the health and happiness of my children. Their smiles and giggles bring me more joy then I could have imagined while pregnant and I’m happy to say my priorities and ambitions in life have changed because of birth.
What advice do you wish you had known before giving birth ( even if it’s something gross)?
Most people focus so much on getting through labor and delivery but the days immediately following birth can be challenging too! Moms put so much pressure on themselves to be right back at it, to look good, to fit into those pre pregnancy jeans again. I wish I had known that it takes time to recover, and that it is A.O.K.! Live it up mamas! Relax and enjoy those precious moments with your newborns.
Tell us a little about your birth story?
I knew from the moment I woke up that it was the day. Lulu was coming! She was going to be born today. Unfortunately for her, we had plans. My husband and children were all involved in a Christmas event and I did not want them to miss out. She and I waited patiently. I enjoyed, as best I could, coffee with a friend and breathed calmly through contraction after contraction. Finally, the program was over and it was time. My husband breezed down the highway in a borrowed mustang and walked me into the hospital. By the time I was examined by a professional I was quite dilated. Lulu continued waiting patiently for all the paperwork to be done. The surges became intense but I remained calm and so did she. My goal was to avoid any medication and to deliver her faster then her older sister (3 pushes.) It took 6 before L made her appearance. To feel her sweet, warm body and hear her little cry made me so happy.
What are your 3 must have birth bag items?

What is one thing you find beautiful about birth?
During the months leading up to birth you learn so much about your baby. you feel as if you know them so well already. Nothing is better then the first moment when you feel their warm little body resting outside of yours. Finally seeing them for who they are, knowing it is just the beginning of so many memories.
What would you tell someone who just found out they were pregnant?
There are so many tough things about being pregnant – your body changes, you hurt, your clothes don’t fit, and you are tired. Despite all that, it is a beautiful time. Enjoy it! Take pictures so you can look back and share with your baby.

Words about your photographer?
I am so happy that Alanna was able to capture our youngest’s birth in photographs! She was so quiet, I didn’t realize she was there, but her pictures will be with us for a lifetime. Precious memories that we would barely remember a year later except for her camera expertise. Thank you Alanna!
