A beautiful boy newborn photography session by Bean and Bedelia Studios is the perfect way to document the cutest #7 addition to this family. No matter what number the baby each pregnancy and deliver is as unique as the miracle of life.
Tell us a about your birth.
I’d been having contractions on and off for a few days, since this was baby #7, I didn’t think much of it. I spent the day working through school work with my children and relaxing as much as I could. After settling my toddlers into a Signing Time video, I told my older kids that I was taking a much needed shower. My back was starting to bug me more than it had been. I called my husband and gave him an update of the day, double checked our dinner plans and talked about renting a movie vs. Netflix.
We continued through our day and I touched base with a friend. She has a big family too- I told her about my contractions and she commented that I seemed to be a bit out of breath and maybe today was the day. I laughed her off. About an hour later, I texted her to say “Haha” as contractions were picking up. I called our wonderful Doula and then my midwife Amanda, and my husband to let him know that it’d be nice if he was home earlier than later.
My oldest asked me if I was ok, I told her yes but please start dinner prep. I then called a friend to ask her to come watch the kids- she started yelling at her kids to load up before we hung up.
She pulled up just as my husband pulled up. I started pacing the sidewalk in front of our house, taking short breaks as contractions came. He told me he’d be right out and we’d go, “Call Amanda, tell her we are on the way”.
We arrived at the Birth Center around 7:30 and I immediately got into the tub. Sitting in the tub helped relax me but I ended up moving around instead. Two hours later, I told my husband that I felt baby was stuck but I also needed to push. Amanda and Kathy, our doula, helped me change positions and rock a little, it held and 10 minutes later I was pushing. He arrived quickly in just two strong pushes. This plump squishy baby and then a loud cry like he was just as happy to be unstuck.
What was the first thing you thought when you held your new baby?
He’s amazing, I did it! It’s amazing that no matter what number baby, it’s the same thought.
What was the first day home with baby like?
It was tiring- I had some complications, so I was more tired than from previous babies. There was lots of laughter though as my toddlers and older children took in their new little brother.
What are your newborn must-have purchase items?
Comfortable pj’s, a couple of good nursing bras or tanks. For baby, a couple new swaddle blankets, they are useful for so many things and it’s nice to have new stuff for each baby.
What postpartum advice for women getting ready to have their own newborn?
Have a few easy meals in the freezer ready to go. Know who your support people are so you can call them if needed. We live several hours from our family so it’s not always possible for them to drop everything.
If you are going to breastfeed, have the numbers for your local La Leche League and an IBCLC on hand if you have questions.
Something you wish you’d known before having a new baby?
How addicting that new baby smell is. How tired you might be.
One thing that you believe is beautiful about being a mother?
Laughter really is contagious, I can be having a rough day but one silly comment or seeing my kids all laughing together is an instant pick me up.
Kind words about your photographer?
Shannon is the best! She has a knack for creating irresistible photos and capturing the spirit of a newborn or their siblings. She’s done several newborn sessions for us and her patience with us as parents but also their siblings looking on is amazing.
Shannon is the owner & photographer at Bean and Bedelia Studios, located just outside of Oklahoma City. She offers maternity, newborn and children’s portrait sessions to her clients and believes in providing one of a kind portraits that truly capture her client’s personality. The most rewarding part of her job is connecting with children and capturing the joy & wonder that they have for the world. Silly and sarcastic, Shannon’s sessions normally involve bubbles, singing, silly jokes and funny faces.
When she is not behind the camera, Shannon can be found running amok with her husband and three children, reading a few good books or enjoying a cup of coffee.
