1. How did you get started in photography and when did you start your business?
Photography has always been one of my hobbies. I started taking a more artistic approach to my photography in highschool thanks to a fantastic photography class. It wasn’t until the birth of my son that I truly found my passion in photographing newborns. I’ve been in business now for a little under two years and I have loved every single minute of it.
2. Where are you located? Do you have a studio space or do you shoot on-location?
I’m located in beautiful Southern California. I share a gorgeous studio in San Clemente with a talented wedding and boudoir photographer.
4. What drew you to newborn, maternity, family photography? Do you photograph anything else?
Going through the journey to becoming a mother was so profound for me. When I made the decision to pursue photography as a career, there was really no other genre that inspired me the way newborn photography did. Having my son changed me in so many ways. I became so aware of how transformative becoming a parent can be for others too. I find those moments not only touching, but intriguing. My photography allows me to peek into these families’ lives for a brief moment and to capture something special for them.
My goal has always been to help families document their little one’s whole first year from maternity to cake smash. I recently started offering mini sessions to capture the special bond between mother and child. I’m really excited to see where this new avenue will lead. At the end of the day photography is all about capturing those special connections.
5. How would you describe your style? Where do you find inspiration?
My style is timeless, natural, warm, and baby-focused. I tend to avoid over-the-top props and wild colors. Instead, I pull colors and inspiration from nature. I haven’t met a neutral color I didn’t love, haha! I love soft textures reminiscent of a comfy sweater and beautiful warm light. When people look at my images I want them to have a sense of warmth and peace. I keep things very simple and classic because I want to create something my families can display in their homes for many, many years to come. I find inspiration everywhere. I keep a pen and paper journal with me all of the time so that I can jot down notes and ideas.
6. Tell us something about you
I’m a mother to an amazing little boy and a wife to a wonderful and supportive man. My son is my “why” and reason I work so hard. I want to show him following your passion can lead to great things if you work hard enough. I have always been an artist in some form. I started drawing and painting when I was only three and worked to develop that skill for years. I also write on a regular basis. I have an extreme need for a creative outlet. In my past work-life I was a quest designer for World of Warcraft. As you can probably guess I am a huge geek and I love it!
My idea of a perfect vacation includes curling up with a good book series and reading the entire thing in one sitting. I love to cook (but I’m not very good at it… yet). I am a fantastic baker! You want perfect chocolate chip cookies, just ask!
7. Favorite Indulgence
A good book and a fantastic bottle of pinot. Sleeping in past 9:00 am might be a close second though!
8. Current or favorite read
Gosh what a hard question! I’m not sure I can pick a favorite book. I’m re-reading Memoirs of A Geisha right now.
9. Favorite Quote
This has been my favorite quote for many, many years. Oddly enough, it’s from Memoirs of A Geisha.
“Adversity is like a strong wind. I don’t mean just that it holds us back from places we might otherwise go. It also tears away from us all but the things that cannot be torn, so that afterward we see ourselves as we really are, and not merely as we might like to be.” – Arthur Golden
